Discover the difference between a compact and active outdoor layout
When planning your active outdoor layout, you will need to assess the configuration of the different exercise stations in relation to each other. We essentially distinguish two categories of active development: compact development and development in the form of a trail.
Active outdoor development in the form of a trail
Active development in the form of trail, as its name suggests, is distinguished by the ventilation of exercise stations in relation to each other. With this type of layout, we play with distance to create dynamism between the different stations. Users must therefore move, either walking or running between installations. Along a path, for example, it will be possible to find a point of interest different from your route at a specific interval of X meters or kilometers. An active route will therefore require good logistics at the display level to guide users, especially when the distance is great. Adding signage to each station therefore becomes a must.
Some advantages of active outdoor development in the form of a trail:
- Extends the development over a large area to reach a maximum of citizens or visitors
- Possibility of a circuit integrating running, walking or cycling
- Stimulating development due to the objective of completing the course (complete all stages)
A disadvantage of active outdoor development in the form of a trail:
- Involves a more or less significant movement between stations which can cause a loss of interest (depending on the clientele chosen)
Active outdoor compact or close-fitting
The compact or close arrangement consists of setting up the various outdoor exercise stations in a very specific location. This type of arrangement is generally more economical than in the form of a trail. This allows you to centralize installation work at one location. Also, it is possible to take advantage of the combination of the clearance areas of the different stations in order to generate savings. Without forgetting that this type of arrangement reduces the number of signage required. In addition, the close-up exterior arrangement increases interactions between individuals. These will have to share the same space!
Some advantages of a compact active outdoor layout:
- Minimizes development costs (excavation, concrete, etc.)
- Maximizes the space available when this is limited (example: downtown, park with lots of trees, etc.)
- Improves social interactivity and brings the community together
A disadvantage of a compact active outdoor layout:
- Limited space reducing the exposure of the development to the population
Be aware that no matter which choice of active layout you choose, there is no right or wrong answer. In reality, several other factors must be considered in order to guarantee the success of your development, such as the type of target clientele or the accessibility to the park or outdoor location, before deciding on the type of outdoor development desired. The main thing is to make sure you create an active layout that meets your needs and get everyone moving outside!
If you wish to assess the development possibilities according to your trail or your park, we will be happy to give you recommendations.
